Choosing cabinet hardware is an important finishing detail in any kitchen, bathroom, mudroom, or built-in project. But equally important is deciding where those handles or knobs should be installed. Hardware placement affects both the overall appearance and day-to-day functionality of your cabinetry.
Standard Cabinet Handle Placement Guidelines
Upper Cabinet Doors
For upper cabinets, handles are typically installed near the bottom corner of the door for easy reach. Vertical handles are commonly positioned approximately 2–3 inches from the bottom edge and aligned consistently throughout the space.
Lower Cabinet Doors
Lower cabinet door handles are usually installed near the top corner of the door. Placement often aligns with rails or internal door details to create a clean, intentional look.
Drawer Fronts
Drawer hardware placement can vary depending on drawer size and design:
Small drawers (under 12") – Often use a single centered knob or smaller pull.
Wide drawers – May use one centered pull in a longer length for balance and functionality.
Centered vs. Rail-Aligned Placement
There are two common approaches to handle positioning:
Centered on Door Rails
Hardware is centered directly on the horizontal rail detail of shaker-style or raised panel doors. This creates a balanced, traditional appearance.
Aligned with Door Details
Some homeowners prefer pulls positioned in line with the inner edge of the door profile or rail detail. This approach creates a more modern, streamlined look.
Neither option is right or wrong, it all comes down to design preference and the style of your cabinetry.
Consistency Matters
One of the biggest factors in professional-looking cabinetry is consistency. Keeping hardware aligned across cabinet runs helps create a polished, intentional finished product.
During our design process, we review hardware style and placement with clients before installation to ensure the final result matches both functionality needs and aesthetic preferences.
